Capsule wardrobe: what it is, how to build one

By the LookMemo team · Updated:

A capsule wardrobe is a small set of versatile clothes in a coordinated palette, where most pieces can be worn with most others. It gives you more outfits from fewer things and makes getting dressed faster.

Where the term comes from

The term is credited to Susie Faux, who ran a London boutique in the 1970s and advised building a wardrobe around a few essential pieces. Donna Karan’s 1985 collection Seven Easy Pieces made the idea famous. Later, Courtney Carver’s Project 333 popularized a challenge: dress with 33 items for three months.

How to build one

Start from your life and your clothes, not from a shopping list:

  • Choose a palette: two or three neutrals as the base and one or two accent colors that suit you.
  • Keep to silhouettes you actually wear and that fit your daily life.
  • Start from what you own: declutter first, and keep the pieces that go with at least two or three others.
  • Fill the gaps one at a time, starting with the piece that would give you the most new outfits.
  • Swap seasonal pieces in and out and keep the core all year.

Common mistakes

Most capsules fail for the same few reasons:

  • Buying a whole new capsule at once instead of starting from your wardrobe.
  • Copying a list from the internet that does not fit your life or your colors.
  • Counting items too strictly: how well pieces combine matters more than the number.

Your colors and the capsule

In a capsule, almost everything is worn with everything, so the base colors matter. When the neutrals and accents suit your coloring, every combination works near your face. Knowing your color type helps you choose them.

How LookMemo helps

LookMemo helps from both sides. The wardrobe review sorts each piece into keep, let go or wear differently. What to buy next makes a list of the gaps in order of priority, with the color and what each new piece would go with.

Your color type palette shows which neutrals and accents to choose, and each item’s 1 to 10 rating explains what it pairs with.

Questions

How many items are in a capsule wardrobe?

There is no fixed number. Project 333 uses 33 items for three months, including shoes and accessories; many people simply start from what they wear most and refine from there.

Is a capsule wardrobe only neutrals?

No. Neutrals make combining easy, but one or two accent colors that suit you keep it from feeling flat.

Do I have to give clothes away?

No. You can store what is out of season or out of use; the point is to see and wear what works.
