What to wear: plan outfits from your own clothes
By the LookMemo team · Updated:
The quickest way to decide what to wear is to plan from what is already in your closet: know your pieces, check the weather and your plans, and build around one anchor piece. A few saved outfits for typical days remove most morning decisions.
Start with an inventory
You cannot plan with clothes you forget you have. Photograph your pieces into a digital closet, or at least list them by category: tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, shoes, bags and accessories. Set aside what does not fit or what you have not worn in a long time, so it does not crowd the choice.
Match the outfit to the day
Three things decide most of it:
- Weather: temperature, rain and wind decide the layers and the shoes.
- Plans: work, a walk, a meeting, sport or a quiet day at home each need something different.
- Comfort: how long you will be on your feet and how you will get there.
Build around one anchor piece
Pick the piece you want to wear today, then add what goes with it: a bottom or a top, shoes and, if needed, a layer. A simple rule helps: one piece that stands out, calm basics around it. A patterned skirt, for example, with a plain knit and neutral boots.
Repeat what works
Save the outfits that felt right and wear them again; rotate so the same few pieces do not do all the work. Choose tomorrow’s outfit in the evening, when you know the forecast and your plans.
Plan a trip the same way
List the days and what you will do, keep to a small palette, and choose pieces that each go with at least two others. Pack outfits rather than single items.
How LookMemo helps
LookMemo plans from your own photographed wardrobe. Today’s outfit checks the weather and your plans (work, a walk, home, sport or a meeting) and picks a look from your clothes; if it is not your mood, ask for another or adjust it in the chat.
The outfit builder puts together a look for any occasion or for one of your own categories, and helps you pack for a trip. The stylist remembers what you have told it, such as no heels at the office, and you can see and delete that list in your profile.

How many clothes do I need?
There is no right number. What matters is that most pieces go with several others; the capsule wardrobe guide explains how to get there.
Does LookMemo suggest clothes I do not own?
Today’s outfit and the outfit builder use your own wardrobe. New pieces come up when you ask what to add to your wardrobe or check a piece before buying it.
Does it work for men too?
Yes. The stylist works with any wardrobe, and the demos on this site show both a woman’s and a man’s look.
